1916 - World War I Grover Cleveland Crump

World War I Uniform

Grover Cleveland Crump of Timpson was a member of the Company "B"
Texas National Guard 1916.
He was sent to the Mexican border, Harlington, under Captain Morrison's
command. At that time Poncho Villa and his followers were a threat to Texas
civilians and their property.  Other officers in the unit were Jim Taylor, 1st Lt.;
Lewis Brown, 2nd Lt. and Joe Compton, Top Sergeant.  We arrived at a camp
where there were plenty of rattlesnakes and cacti.  We help guard a pontoon
that had been destroyed and rebuilt.  We moved from that site to Corpus
Christi with Co. B.  We cleared the ground and made a camp.  It was named
Camp Curry.  This site is now Sherrill Park, named after the first sailor killed
in World War II.  We spent 11 months on the border, keeping Poncho Villa
out of Texas.  World War 1 was declared and all able bodied men were called
to the regular Army.  He was sent to San Antonio and his named was called
to go to El Paso.  He was trained at this camp to tie knots, pack mules and
classify horses for a pack train school. Both mules and horses were classified
and records on them were kept in detail.  They would load a train of box cars
with horses and mules, when they were ready to be sent to war zones overseas.
Later he was sent to New York, with a load of animals and they had to stop
along the way, unload the horses and mules to feed and water.  We crossed
the Mississippi by ferry, and remarked the animals were fed better than we
were.  He was sent to Fort Huachura, Arizona to guard the border.

He was named for Grover Cleveland, 24th President of the United States. He received his honorable discharge on February 18, 1919.
